Another Ugly Loss

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Another ugly loss was handed to the Bears yesterday after the defense gave the offense ample opportunities to score. The Bears defense turned the ball over multiple times and held McNabb to only 17 points. Then of course Jay Cutler throws four interceptions in one half and you know the rest of the story. The defense played amazing, easily their best game of the year. Too bad it was over shadowed by the offense’s constant mistakes.

I think Lovie made a big mistake as well by not challenging Jay Cutlers touchdown. The ball clearly broke the plane. Turned out to be just another Lovie mistake. Don’t know how many bad challenges or non-challenges he has done so far. The folks in the box and Lovie need to be on the same page.

One of my major concerns going into the bye week is Forte’s ability to hold onto the ball. His rookie season he had one fumble and it was an iffy call too. Since his rookie season he’s had 9 fumbles, and 5 of those were lost. They really need to work on it during the bye week and get some ball control.

There was some improvement by the offensive line yesterday. After giving up some early sacks they were able to give Jay Cutler some time to throw the ball and some lanes for Chester Taylor and Matt Forte to run through. They just need to stop committing dumb penalties, such as holding and false starts.

Bears vs Redskins Prediction

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Before I give my prediction, I would like to say that I’m a Bears fan and I’ll always be. If you are wondering why I’m saying this, it’s because I’m predicting the Bears to lose this one.

The Bears haven’t been the same since the loss against the Giants, especially Jay Cutler. He hasn’t looked comfortable and poised in the pocket, and why would he be. He has been sacked more than any quarterback for the Bears that I can remember. I just feel so bad for him. No one deserves the pain he has to go through every week except maybe Brett Favre. I think it’s only a matter of time before Jay ends up on injured reserve this season.

I don’t think Jay will be able to do much this game, due to the fact he’s facing a good defense. They are definitely better than the Seahawks all around. I’m thinking Jay will throw for a touchdown and two interceptions. It’s not because Jay’s a bad QB. It’s because the defense will most likely be in his face every down.

Donovan McNabb will most likely chip away at the defense like he has done every time the Bears faced him in a Philly uniform. I still don’t know why the Eagles traded him, and to a division rival no less.

The Bears defense will probably decide the game, and since they will be on the field most of the time it won’t end well for them. They won’t give up a lot of big plays though. Just a lot of long time consuming drives by the ‘Skins that will wear them down.

The Special Teams for the Bears will probably be spot on tomorrow. I’m really hoping that Devin Hester breaks the return touchdowns record at home this year, but I’m afraid that no one will kick to him.

Final Score
Redskins 24
Bears 16

Bears vs Seahawks grades

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Having some time to cool off and think about the Bears loss with a clear mind, I have come up with the notion that the Bears really play poorly against teams they should dominate any other day. They shoot themselves in the foot every time they walk out of the locker room. I don’t know why they just can’t prepare for every game like it’s a must win or the super bowl. They should be going all out every game for that big “W”. Instead it seems like they show up and shoot themselves in the foot. The only bright spot of the day was seeing Hester run one back to tie the record for most return touchdowns.

The offense played horrid, going 0-12 on third down conversions. You will almost never win a game when you do that. You also can’t win a game when your quarterback is sacked six times. The Bears couldn’t run the ball, or pass the ball efficiently and it was hard to watch. Cutler looked dazed and confused out there and if J.A. was smart he’d cut an offensive lineman and pick up a proven young free agent lineman. I don’t want to see Jay Cutler hit so many times they find him on Lower Wacker Drive. If the Bears cannot protect Jay, they will see him on the I.R. very soon.

The Bears offense wasn’t completely at fault for the loss, the defense played poorly as well. No sacks and turnovers didn’t help either. The Bears thrive off of turnovers and pressuring the QB. Two things they didn’t do at all yesterday. A lot of poor tackling and execution on the defense certainly didn’t help at all either.

Here are the grades for this week.

Offense: D

Defense: C

Special Teams: A-

Bears vs Seahawks Prediction

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Jay Cutler is back in action and will lead the offense to victory. He’s had plenty of time to rest and I’m sure he’s eager to throw the ball for 300+ yards. Matt Forte is coming off a great game against the Panthers. Running for 166 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. I expect him to have a good game, but I don’t think he will get that many carries as he did against the Panthers. With Cutler back in action, I expect Forte to get around 15 carries at most.

The Bears wide receivers have been very quiet for the past two weeks for obvious reasons, but this will change against the Seahawks. They are due for a huge game. I would really like to see Devin Aromashodu catch some passes, but he needs to escape Lovie’s dog house first.

The defense will be on the ball again, creating turnovers, getting in the QB’s face and making smart plays. The only area of the defense concerns me is the Lance Brigg’s position. It looks like he’s going to sit this game out with an ankle injury. His back up is Brian Iwuh, and I haven’t seen him play enough to feel comfortable if he started. He did play at the end of the Panthers game, but it was pretty much over. I do expect the Seahawks to run and pass his way if he does start. So hopefully he will bring his ‘A’ game this Sunday.

Here’s my prediction, The Bears will in in a blow out.

Bears 38
Seahawks 14

Bears vs Panthers prediction

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

Sorry for the late prediction Bear fans. I don’t think this will be a high scoring game and it will come down whoever has the ball last. Without Jay Cutler at the helm, Todd Collins will have to step up and play like the experienced veteran he is. I would rather have Caleb Hanie starting today, but the only way he will see the field is if the o-line doesn’t do their job or Collins really sucks it up.

Speaking of the offensive line, they will have to prove themselves after that embarrassing effort they displayed against the Giants last Sunday. I for one am tired of seeing a Bears QB run for their life or the RB being stuffed three yards behind the line of scrimmage. If the Bears want to win today, they will have to establish the run early.

The Bears defense will be up against a rookie QB thankfully. So far Jimmy Clausen hasn’t been too hot for the Panthers since he started in week three. He has thrown one touchdown and two interceptions. Hopefully the defense will be able to pressure him early and often and force a few bad throws for turnovers. The Bears D also has to look out for the Panthers running game. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are very capable and proven running backs. Hopefully the Bears D will not be burned by either of them or Jerry Angelo will have to cut another defensive lineman.

Final Score
Bears 21
Panthers 17

Jay Cutler out, Collins in

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Jay Cutler will not be starting this Sunday when the Bears face the Panthers. Instead, veteran QB Todd Collins will be starting. I’m glad the Bears are benching Jay Cutler this Sunday to allow some recovery time.

Cutler exited last Sunday night’s loss to the Giants at halftime with a concussion. After practicing on a limited basis Wednesday, Cutler met with Bears doctors and an independent consultant.

Both parties recommended that Cutler, who has made steady progress, continue to work out on a limited basis through the end of the week and sit out Sunday’s game before being re-evaluated again early next week.

Source: ChicagoBears.com – Collins to start for Bears in Carolina

I would rather have Caleb Hanie starting this Sunday instead of Todd Collins, but since Collins is a veteran he is getting the ball. Collins hasn’t started a game since 2007, so let’s see if he can make it through the day.

Also, here’s a little fun fact, well not so fun anymore. Jay Cutler hasn’t missed a game since 2006, and it will end a 57 game streak.

Jay Cutler is on the field today, too soon?

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

According to the Chicago Bears twitter page, Jay Cutler is on the field today. In my opinion, this is a bad idea, Cutler needs all the rest he can get after suffering a concussion while being sacked nine times on Sunday. If the Bears really wanted to protect Jay Cutler, they need to bench him this Sunday. Concussions are a hot topic in the NFL right now and the Bears already have one player on I.R. for concussion like symptoms.

I know if they were to bench Cutler, there’s a good chance the Bears would lose the game. I would very much rather have a 100% healthy, concussion free Cutler than one who is still suffering from the injury.

Bears MNF grades

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Sorry it took so late to post the grades.

Quarterback: B
- Made some mistakes throughout the game, including a lot of bad throws. If there hadn’t been penalties called against the Packers there would of been a lot more interceptions. He did have a nice run and had the sense to run out of bounds right after the first down yard marker. I’m so happy we have a mobile quarterback.

Running back: C
- They weren’t able to get a lot of yards on the ground, but as usual they helped out the passing game. I would of liked to see them run the ball efficiently, but the offensive line needs to create holes instead of being pushed back five yards.

Wide Receivers: B
- There’s a lot of B’s going around this week. They weren’t too spectacular, but they did their job. Knox was the same old tough as nails receiver we love. He had four receptions for 94 yards which led the Bears receivers. Earl Bennett almost had a touchdown, but it was called down at the one barely.

Tight Ends: B-
- I know Greg Olsen had the only receiving touchdown for the Bears, but he also had a fumble and Dez Clark dropped a pass in the end zone. Other than those two things they played fairly well and that’s why I gave the TE’s a B-

Offensive Line: C+
- They could of done a better job in the passing and running game, especially when it came to running the ball. It’s ridiculous that they can’t even run block for Matt Forte, who is just itching to break a big one to the end zone.  I do have one thing to say, and that is good job Kevin Shaffer for blocking Clay Matthews.

Defensive Line: B+
- Even though they haven’t registered a sack in two games, they played well against the run. They pressured Aaron Rodgers enough to get the Pack for holding numerous times and false starts. I think at one point the line was afraid of the defense to bring all fury down upon them.  Also kudos for Peppers blocking a key field goal.

Linebackers: A+
- It was another beautiful outing for the linebackers this week. Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs are beasts, both registered a turnover during the game and one came on a very important play. They also were tied for tackles that game with nine. From what I remember hearing before the game, Urlacher was 50 tackles away from becoming the all-time tackle leader for the Bears. He is now 41 tackles from becoming the all-time leader. Keep it up Brian!

Defensive Backs: B
- The DB’s played fairly well, I just wish they could of done a lot better. They gave up way too many passing yards and weren’t able to pick Rodgers off. They were able to stop the Packers receivers on a lot of plays, so kudos to them for doing that. Packers receivers are experts for getting yards after the catch. Also thank you Tim Jennings for making some great plays and jumping on the football while staying in bounds.

Special Teams: A+
- The Windy City Flyer is back. His two year absence is finally over and I think know, this is the year of Devin Hester.  He looked great returning punts on Monday and it was a thing of beauty to see him run one back, even better that it was against the Packers. Also, thank you Robbie Gould for making the game winning field goal. Stay gold my friend.

Bears vs Packers prediction

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

The NFL’s oldest rivalry is set to resume this Monday when the Bears face off against the Packers. Unlike the past few games between the Packers and Bears, this one very important. Both teams are undefeated and this division game could end up being the game that separates the two teams at the end of the season. If the Bears win this one, it will finally prove to everyone outside of Chicago that they are contenders. With that being said, it will be a very physical and hard fought game. I’m expecting at least two fights and plenty of hard hits from both teams.

The Bears offensive line will have to find an answer for a beast that roams the field for the Packers. No, I’m not talking about a flock of sheep on steroids, I’m talking about the beast in Clay Matthews. He has six sacks in two games… six sacks! I have to give a lot of credit for a player doing that, even if it’s a Packer. If the offensive line finds a way to stop Mathews from sacking Cutler, it will be a good game for the offense. I’m not too worried about the Packers secondary.

The Bears defense needs to continue what they are doing. Just stop the run and force bad throws by Rodgers to create turnovers. I expect Tillman to create at least one turnover this game. I’m guessing it will be a forced fumble, he is so good at doing that. My friends here said on one of their podcast’s  that Tillman must punch footballs in his sleep and I completely agree.

So here’s my prediction. It will be a very well fought game, but the Bears will win this one.

Bears 21
Packers 17

Bears need to watch out for Clay Matthews

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I don’t like to compliment many Packers on my blog but… Clay Matthews is a wrecking ball. So far he has compiled six sacks in two games, along with a forced fumble. The Bears need to find an answer to stop him from clobbering Jay Cutler. With a thin and a bit of a weak offensive line that was exposed for most of the game against the Cowboys, it’s going to be a challenge.

Frank Omiyale/Kevin Shaffer or pretty much whoever is lined up at Right Tackle needs to block Matthews like their life depends on it. If the Bears want to continue this winning streak they need to block for Jay Cutler and prevent him from going down for the rest of the season. The only way the Bears will get into the playoffs this year is if Jay Cutler is the QB, not a back up because the line failed to protect Jay.

Also be prepared to see a very violent game in Chicago this Monday. The Bears defense was lighting folks up on the Cowboys, and they aren’t even a division rival. Imagine what Lance Briggs, Urlacher, Chris Harris, and Tillman might do to the Packers. I’m hoping for a very physical game from the defense. The Packers need to understand there are eleven hungry Bears coming after Aaron Rodgers every down of the game.
