Bears MNF grades

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Sorry it took so late to post the grades.

Quarterback: B
- Made some mistakes throughout the game, including a lot of bad throws. If there hadn’t been penalties called against the Packers there would of been a lot more interceptions. He did have a nice run and had the sense to run out of bounds right after the first down yard marker. I’m so happy we have a mobile quarterback.

Running back: C
- They weren’t able to get a lot of yards on the ground, but as usual they helped out the passing game. I would of liked to see them run the ball efficiently, but the offensive line needs to create holes instead of being pushed back five yards.

Wide Receivers: B
- There’s a lot of B’s going around this week. They weren’t too spectacular, but they did their job. Knox was the same old tough as nails receiver we love. He had four receptions for 94 yards which led the Bears receivers. Earl Bennett almost had a touchdown, but it was called down at the one barely.

Tight Ends: B-
- I know Greg Olsen had the only receiving touchdown for the Bears, but he also had a fumble and Dez Clark dropped a pass in the end zone. Other than those two things they played fairly well and that’s why I gave the TE’s a B-

Offensive Line: C+
- They could of done a better job in the passing and running game, especially when it came to running the ball. It’s ridiculous that they can’t even run block for Matt Forte, who is just itching to break a big one to the end zone.  I do have one thing to say, and that is good job Kevin Shaffer for blocking Clay Matthews.

Defensive Line: B+
- Even though they haven’t registered a sack in two games, they played well against the run. They pressured Aaron Rodgers enough to get the Pack for holding numerous times and false starts. I think at one point the line was afraid of the defense to bring all fury down upon them.  Also kudos for Peppers blocking a key field goal.

Linebackers: A+
- It was another beautiful outing for the linebackers this week. Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs are beasts, both registered a turnover during the game and one came on a very important play. They also were tied for tackles that game with nine. From what I remember hearing before the game, Urlacher was 50 tackles away from becoming the all-time tackle leader for the Bears. He is now 41 tackles from becoming the all-time leader. Keep it up Brian!

Defensive Backs: B
- The DB’s played fairly well, I just wish they could of done a lot better. They gave up way too many passing yards and weren’t able to pick Rodgers off. They were able to stop the Packers receivers on a lot of plays, so kudos to them for doing that. Packers receivers are experts for getting yards after the catch. Also thank you Tim Jennings for making some great plays and jumping on the football while staying in bounds.

Special Teams: A+
- The Windy City Flyer is back. His two year absence is finally over and I think know, this is the year of Devin Hester.  He looked great returning punts on Monday and it was a thing of beauty to see him run one back, even better that it was against the Packers. Also, thank you Robbie Gould for making the game winning field goal. Stay gold my friend.

Week One Grades by GammaBears

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Quarterbacks: A-
Jay Cutler had a solid outing against the Lions. He passed for 372 yards and threw two touchdowns, and both of those were to Matt Forte. He had one mistake, and that was throwing the interception. Completely his fault, but otherwise he threw the ball away if there was no one open instead of forcing the throw.

Running backs: B
I gave the RB’s a ‘B’ for one real reason, their ability to catch the ball and create yards after the catch. Forte had an abysmal 50 yards rushing but ended up with 151 yards in receiving. He had two receiving touchdowns, which were the Bears only touchdowns in that game. One thing that hurt the Bears was his inability to hold onto, he can’t do that against good teams like Dallas. Chester Taylor had an okay outing, he had 29 yards rushing on the day and 44 receiving on the day.

Wide Receivers: B+
It’s pretty obvious that Jay Cutler’s new best friend is Devin Aromashodu. He had an excellent game with 5 catches for 71 yards, but unfortunately no touchdowns. He dropped an easy touchdown in the endzone. He needs to capitalize on those opportunities. Cutler would of had 3 touchdowns in that game if he had caught that ball.  Johnny Knox had a pretty good game, catching the ball three times for 52 yards. He had a successful season in his rookie year and I expect him to continue that. Devin Hester was once again quiet with only one catch. I don’t think he will be too spectacular this year, but will help distract defense backs with double coverage.

Tight End: C+
Greg Olsen had… an okay outing. He could of done a lot better by holding onto that ball. Just one of four turnovers by the Bears. If he hadn’t of done that, the TE’s would of gotten a better grade. He needs some work holding onto that ball.

Offensive line: D+
Their inability to create holes for Forte and Taylor and protect Jay Cutler deserves this grade. Also for not pushing the Lions back on the one yard line for Forte to get a touchdown. It was just horrendous out there. They were being pushed around like rookies. They gave up four sacks to the Detroit Lions. They are going to be in trouble when they face Dallas, Green Bay and Minnesota this year.

Defensive line: A
They were harassing Matt Stafford and Shaun Hill all day long. They were only to get two sacks total, but the numbers lie. They were creating lots of pressure, causing Stafford and Hill to make bad throws. They were able to shut down the Lions running game for the most part. Both of Jahvid Best’s touchdowns were little run-ins.  Julius Peppers proved his worth by sacking Stafford and causing a fumble. Unfortunately for Stafford he was injured on the play and could be out for 2-6 weeks.

Linebackers: A+
Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Pisa Tinoisomoa were a force to be reckoned with. They were all over the place delivering pain. Urlacher shut up his critics in the first game of the season by registering 8 tackles and one sack. Having a year to rest does wonders in my opinion. Briggs was also a key player on Sunday when he forced that fumble inside the five yard line. Too bad the offense wasn’t able to do much with the gift.

Secondary: B+
The Bears secondary didn’t give up really any big plays, but they didn’t look too spectacular when Lovie called in the prevent defense. I know that the defense isn’t designed to bring the pressure in the prevent defense, but they should of at least got in the receivers face in the first five yards. They should of also double teamed Calvin Johnson. This whole debacle in the end zone wouldn’t of happened and the Bears wouldn’t of won on an iffy ruling.

Special Teams: B
They didn’t up any big returns, but they also didn’t have many themselves. I wished Hester would of ran one back when they kicked to the fifty yard line. Every time a team does that, it reminds me of a PR TD in a Vikings game at home.

Chicago Bears Training Camp – Day 7

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I keep hearing negative things about this Bears team from talking heads around Chicago. It they took the time to pay attention they would notice that we could have one of the best Bears defenses we’ve had in a long time. That of course is based on the idea that everyone stays healthy. We are really only deep on the D-line, so the linebackers and secondary HAS to stay healthy for us to have a strong defense.

Offense is another thing. If our offense can keep our D off the field, and move the ball with moderate consistency it will go a long way in keeping our D healthy. Hester (assuming he retains his role as a return man) will give us continual field position advantages, and our offense just has to get some points out of it. If we can get 17 – 20 points out of our offense, and the defense remains healthy, we will have a good year.

All in all, I am sick and tired of all the negativity that I hear spewed out of the mouths of talking heads, mostly coming FROM Chicago. I don’t know how you can be a fan of the Bears and say some of the things those morons say.

Enough talk, enjoy some highlights from Roy at Bears training camp.

Had to remove. Sorry.

Chicago Bears Training Camp – Day 5

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Chicago Bears Training camp day 5. Peanut refining his outstanding quarterback skills. Some good some bad. It really looks like Rex is outplaying Kyle in camp. This is no surprise to me, because Rex has always been a great practice player. He just needs to relax and play his game once the season starts. The interesting things to watch here is the WR battles that are going on. Not only are Brandon Lloyd, Devin Hester, Rashied Davis, and Marty Booker battling it out, but Mike Haas has been looking good. As Roy from SportsFansNetwork points out, Rex and Haas seem to have something going. He is a Tom Waddle type receiver who just seems to hang around, and won’t quit.

To sum up, I think Rex is going to have the starting job going into the preseason, but the real battle is at the WR position.

Had to remove. Sorry.

Hester AT CAMP, Day 3

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Devin Hester, after a small holdout, is back in camp. He was at breakfast this morning, and caused a slight stir even amongst the players.

Nathan Vasher, Bears CB, said “We’re a whole lot better with him being here.” So the players are obviously excited he is back. There is no word on whether a deal has been struck or not, but Hester is back in camp and ready to work. He obviously realizes the team needs him, and it will be better for him in the long run if he practices and resumes his role as a team player.

I believe the Bears and Hester are pretty close to a deal.
