There are lots of Bears fans out there who want Torry Holt…bad. I happen to be one of them. Torry Holt would be huge for this Bears team. However, I would like to bring up something that most Bears fans might not have thought about when it comes to the conceivable acquisition of Holt.

The main reason that Torry Holt is needed is obvious. Torry Holt would give the Bears a consistent threat that can make the big catches, and be the number 1 receiver the Bears so desperately need. If they were to sign Holt, that would allow Hester to take the role he should be in as the number 2, and let Rashied Davis or Earl Bennett take the slot spot. With the addition of Holt the Bears don’t really need anymore upgrades on offense(other than the question of another receiver possibly). I really can’t believe I just typed that by the way.

All this being the case, here is the second reason the Bears need Torry Holt, and the less apparent one. With Holt, the Bears could then utilize ALL of their draft picks for the defensive side of the ball potentially. This could be a huge boost for the defense, the same defense that frustratingly gave up late scores that lost games like the Tampa, Atlanta, and Carolina games. A defense that was a mere shell of the defense that dominated the NFC North for the past several years.

Defensive draft picks have less of a learning curve overall, thus they generally can make an impact more immediately than offensive draft picks. Yet another reason to go all D in the draft.

Don’t get me wrong, if it just so happens that a gem on offense happens to fall like a rock on draft day, the Bears don’t need to pass him up just because they have it in their heads to bolster the Defense. I also don’t mean to say that they should reach for anyone on D just because they need someone in that position. However, I do think that, generally speaking, there will be a player at our draft spot on D, that fits what we need in most rounds of the draft.

So here’s to trying to win Torry Holt, and may he upgrade more than the Offense!

There are so many rumors circulating that the Bears somehow knew that Williams had a back injury and drafted him anyway. Then, they tried to put him in during training camp, and he either aggravated his injury or the injury caused him to compensate in other areas of his body, therefore herniating a disc in his back. The rumor further insinuates that the Bears didn’t care that Williams had back trouble and that he would be okay.

During Senior Bowl week an article was posted on Scout.com regarding “who’s hot” and “who’s not” among collect football’s top prospects. Chris Williams was listed as a player who was “hot” at the moment, and would be a good draft pick. Rumors later surfaced from other teams regarding William’s back. These rumors, however, according to reliable sources such as Jeff Dickerson, reporter for ESPN 1000 in Chicago, were supposed to cause his draft stock to drop so that teams could possibly pick him up later in the draft, and get a steal.

This along with the fact that in his college career at Vanderbilt University, Williams never missed a game or a practice due to injury. He remained at a high level, and played well in the Senior Bowl, with no noticeable discomfort.

It is a stretch to think or insinuate that the Bears knew that Williams had back problems and drafted him anyway. They take great caution and immense evaluation when drafting a player, and there were other highly touted Offensive linemen they could have drafted at the same place. Consequently a lot of them are injured now as well. Brandon Albert, Jeff Otah to name a couple. Keep in mind that the injuries happen, and it is very common for teams to try to circulate rumors about players before the draft to try get their draft stock to drop to where that team is drafting.

Williams will be ok eventually, and it won’t be the end of the world for the Bears.

Since the only 2 offensive linemen selected were Jake Long and Ryan Clady, it left the Bears with an easy choice of one of the great remaining offensive tackles. Chris Williams from Candy was a good choice if he can get a little stonger.

Before we can get the ball to our talented wide receivers. Before we can run the ball with Cedric Benson, Adrian Peterson, Garrett Wolfe, or Joe Schmo. Even before we can have a successful quarterback, we HAVE to have a good offensive line. Our offensive line is, as most people know, the oldest offensive line in the NFL. Some of them have been around so long they were in attendance at the same play were Lincoln was shot in 1865. Most likely the poor play is due to age, but whatever it is due to, the offensive line is playing horrendous football right now. Probably the most telling stat for the poor offensive line performance is rushing yards per game. The Bears rank 31st in the league averaging only 82. The only team worse is the Kansas City Chiefs, and they are terrible. We are also tied for last in yards per carry at 3.2, once again with the Chiefs. It is not a good thing to be in the same category with a Larry Johnsonless Chiefs. I couldn’t find any stats on penalties, but I know Fred Miller has to lead the universe in false starts. He does so, because he knows that if he doesn’t get a head start he is giving up a sack or a tackle for a loss, and does most of the time even when he does have a head start.

Over all on our offensive line we need to replace 2 guys. John Tait looks like he might have a couple of good years left in him, Terrence Metcalf needs to be replaced, Olin Kruetz is still a stud, but not for too much longer, Roberto Garza supposedly already has a replacement in Josh Beekman (we have yet to see him play), and the player that needs replacing the most – Fred Miller. With the acquisition of Josh Beekman in last years 4th round of the draft, the Bears hopefully fill the remaining two spots through free agency and possibly the draft. If the Bears can pick up a good O-lineman through free agency, which is what Jerry Angelo likes to do, then that would free them up to fill other needs in the draft. Let’s just hope that Angelo and the Bears don’t spend a bunch of draft picks on players who are going to spend next year on IR like a lot of players from this years draft class.

Let us know what you think our team needs the most.
