Quick rundown/aftermath of Sunday’s game

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Game was very ugly right after the Bears scored their first touchdown. It went down hill from there. Bears offense was clearly hurting without Roy Williams, Marion Barber and Lance Louis. It didn’t help that Jay’s go to guy, Earl Bennett went out to what appears to be a rib injury. Also didn’t help when Gabe Carimi went out as well. It was just ugly all over, except for Matt Forte and Dane Sanzenbacher. Dane recorded his first touchdown, the only touchdown for the Bears and Matt forte pretty much was the entire offense… It’s a bit reminiscent of how Walter Payton was the offense for the Bears for pretty much his entire career.

Probably didn’t help that the offense line gave up 5 sacks in the fourth and Jay Cutler was kicked in the throat in the third quarter. It was just a bad day for the offense period…

The defense clearly missed Chris Harris after Major Wright and Chris Conte were beat for a game changing long bomb from Brees. They gave up a lot of third down conversions which pretty much infuriated my dad and myself. Run defense was OK, certainly didn’t look to spectacular. The pass defense never really took control of the game away from Brees.

Really hope Jay, Wright, Carimi and Bennett is okay. Think those are the only ones who went down Sunday.

Oh… I would like to have a word with Martz and Lovie… Why in the heck did you keep Jay in the game with no chance of winning? You could of ended his season and possibly his career.

Bears vs Patriots preview

Friday, December 10th, 2010

The are four games left in the season and each of them will be challenges for the Bears. Starting off with the Patriots, who just got done putting a shellacking on the Jets.Let me just say that this will probably be the most difficult game for the Bears this year. They will be challenged on all fronts.

For the Bears to win this game, they need to stop the Patriots passing game. It is easily one of the best in the league, and thankfully for the Bears, they have one of the best defenses in the league. The Bears need to pressure Brady all throughout the game. I don’t care how they do it, the front four has to bring their ‘A’ game if they want to beat the Patriots. The Bears defensive backs also have to be on their game, one slip up and Brady will throw the bomb for a touchdown every time. One player to watch out for is Danny Woodhead, he’s been tearing up defenses with his ability to elude tackles and his lightning speed. As long as the Bears defense doesn’t let up and give up the big plays like in Detroit, they should be able to stop Tom Brady and the Patriot’s explosive offense.

The Bears offense has been performing fairly well since the bye week. They haven’t committed many turnovers as they did before the bye. Jay Cutler has stepped up in a big way for the Bears. He has stopped making stupid mistakes that result in turnovers. It probably helps that Mike Martz finally realized the Bears don’t need to throw the long ball every down of the game. It’s an even balanced pass/run offense now. Something that is more suited to the Bears talents on offense. If the Bears plan to win this game, everyone and I do mean everyone on the offense needs to bring their ‘A’ game. They need to be perfect on all fronts to beat the Pats on Sunday.

I’m not predicting a blow out in this game, it will be a well fought game with lots of penalties. Both teams are looking to be the top dog in the NFL. I firmly believe the Bears will win this one and will earn the respect they deserve.

Final Score
Bears 28
Patriots 27

Bears win in Toronto

Monday, November 8th, 2010

The Bears ended the two game losing streak against a very good win-less Bills team. For the past few weeks the Bills have barely lost games, two of those came in overtime.

The Bears offense struggled at times throughout the game and it really surprised me. Especially when running the ball against the worst run defense in the league. But hey, at least the Bears won. That’s all that matters right now. A win is a win.

The passing game just seemed a little off throughout the game, but Jay Cutler did not throw an interception. It wasn’t his greatest performance but he got the job done. I think the Mike Martz offense is a bit more complicated than people think. Jay Cutler is a pretty smart guy and he’s still struggling with it. Earl Bennett had a good game yesterday. He caught his first touchdown of the season. Greg Olsen also reeled in a touchdown as well.

The running game wasn’t real pretty. The Bears ran the balls the four times in their first two possessions. Matt Forte rushed for 49 yards on 14 carries. He didn’t really play an excellent game but he did have a key play when scored the two point conversion late in the fourth quarter. Chester Taylor scored his first touchdown of the year and the line actually blocked for him It was the first time all year I think the Bears have scored from the goal line.

The defense struggled some, but as usual they came up big when they were able to create turnovers. Israel Idonije played extremely well throughout the game. He blocked an extra point and registered half a sack. The blocked extra point was key in the game and it was the kickers first blocked extra point in his career. Leave it to a Bear to create a stat like that. If you have ever noticed, Israel actually resembles a Bear. He his tall, full of muscles and has a pretty cool beard. Tim Jennings came up big in the game by intercepting Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bears would score a touchdown from that turnover. Chris Harris also caused a key turnover by sealing the game with an interception. Seeing Chris intercept Fitzpatrick reminded me of his days in 2005-2006.

Overall the Bears defense played a good game besides getting burned a few times. Can’t help but wonder why Lovie kept calling plays on defense where the CB’s were lined up about 5-10 yards from the line of scrimmage instead of having them bump the receivers. I personally don’t like seeing that type of coverage because the QB can easily pick the defense apart with short slant routes that go for 5-7 yards.

Bears win ugly against the Lions

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The Bears won an ugly and hard fought game against the Lions yesterday and are now tied for first in the NFC North. I know what your thinking, it was all because of the call in the end zone and you’re right. It was an iffy call and I couldn’t be happier about that right now. I just look at it this way, the Bears were screwed over last year many times because of non-calls. Now the Bears are finally even with that ruling in the end zone. It’s done and no one can do anything about it, so let’s look forward to taking on a miffed Dallas team.

Jay Cutler preformed well against the Lions, throwing over 300 yards and two touchdown passes. I’m very pleased with the Mike Martz offense, minus the inability to score when you’re three inches away from the goal line. I’m positive would have at least two more touchdowns if the Bears didn’t cough up the ball four times.

The Offensive line was okay during the first half and looked awful after that. If Jerry Angelo can’t see the problem with the offensive line after yesterdays game, then I think he’s legally blind. They did help Forte on that monster screen pass that gave the Bears a touchdown. They need to step up there game when they face Dallas next Sunday.

Matt Forte returned to his rookie form on Sunday in my opinion. Haven’t seen that kind of burst from him since he first joined the Bears in 2008. It was just unfortunate that the line didn’t block for him or create holes for him to run through. He did have a wonderful game catching passes though. He had 7 receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns. I would of liked to see him have more yards on the ground, but I’m happy with those receiving yards. Chester Taylor saw some action against the Lions too. Only running for 29 yards, but catching for 44. I think there’s still plenty of gas left in his engine to make some big plays for the Bears this year. Mark my words folks.

The wide receivers had a good game as well even if they didn’t really find the end zone. Devin Aromashodu led the receivers with 5 catches for 71 yards. After Sunday’s game, it’s clear that ‘Shodu is Jay Cutler’s favorite target. I expect to see a lot more from him this season as well. Johnny Knox also had a few receptions on the day, but nothing spectacular.

So the offense overall still needs some work, but they played OK out there even with all those turnovers.

The defense played fairly well in the first half and completely dominated in the second half… except for the last drive of the game. They are experts in the Lovie Smith Prevent defense where they barely win games and lose a lot.

The D-Line had pressure on Stafford and Shaun Hill for the most part of the game. Julius Peppers looked fantastic out there with a sack and forced fumble on the same play. He also injured the second year quarterback Stafford, knocking him out of the game and possibly two to six weeks. Which is a shame, he’s a nice guy. It’s just that he’s playing for the wrong team. The Bears d-line will have a tough game against Dallas next week. Hopefully Peppers and crew will dominate that line and have at least five sacks total.

The Linebackers were on fire Sunday, creating all sorts of havoc. Lance Briggs created a turnover on the two yard line, unfortunately the Bears offense didn’t capitalize on that. Briggs had a solid day and I hope he keeps that up. The same goes with Brian Urlacher who looked like his rookie self out there. He was energetic and hit folks like there was no tomorrow. Urlacher also had a sack in that game, which rarely happens because they usually keep him back in coverage where he’s monster.

The Defensive Backs looked alright in that game, didn’t give up too many big plays. Charles “Peanut” Tillman had a nice interception when Calvin Johnson tripped himself. That won’t happen too often so I’m glad that Peanut was able to capitalize on that gift. I just don’t know if the Bears secondary will be able to handle all the weapons Dallas has at their disposal. I just hope they step up their “A” game and create lots of turnovers.

Chicago Bears Tight Ends

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

The Bears arguably have one of the best Tight End tandems in the NFL in my opinion. Of course I’m probably a little biased because I’m a die hard Bears fan. Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen will dominate this year, even in the Mike Martz offense. I don’t care what anyone says about Olsen, he can be a dominant tight end, he just needed some time to develop. I think he just did that last year and this offseason. We all know what Dez Clark can do, he’s a proven blocker and a catching tight end for the Bears. I really hope he stays with the Bears for the rest of his career and retires in Chicago. Anyways, not to get off track here, but the Bears will have one of the most dominant tight end tandems in the league this year.

The only thing that worries me about Greg Olsen is his blocking ability, which is why the Bears picked up Brandon Manumaleuna. That and he played for Mike Martz with the Rams. From what I’ve read and heard about Brandon, he’s a very good blocking tight end and not so much a receiving one. I think with the Bears new offensive line coach Mike Tice, who is primarily known for his great offensive line coaching. He will teach Greg Olsen how to block instead of looking like a fish out there. That’s what really hampered Olsen last year. I remember the San Fran game, mainly because I was there front row behind the Bears bench and the fact we lost that game. Anyway, every time they were going to run the ball, they took out Greg Olsen. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what was going on and the Niners knew for sure. I think Tice will be able to teach Olsen and make him an all around great Tight End for years to come.

I don’t know much about Richard Angulo, except he’s been in the league since 2003 and has hopped from team to team. Mainly staying on the practice squad or as a reserve player. He did play from 2007-2008 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and recorded one touchdown. Oh, he was also coached by Tice while playing on the Vikings and Jags. He was also was on the Bears roster in 2006, but didn’t play in any games.

Kellen Davis was drafted by the Bears in the fifth round in 2008 and hasn’t had a lot of success but there hasn’t been much of an opportunity to do so.  I Believe he is mainly used in goal line situations because of his height and his blocking skills.  I don’t know what kind of year this will be for him. With Dez Clark and Greg Olsen taking most of the snaps this year, it could be a very quiet season for him, Manu Manu and Angulo as well.

Bears Running Backs

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

The Bears have plenty of depth at the running back position this year thankfully. This will give Forte a breather during games instead of having to be depended upon every play so it seemed last year. That’s one of the reasons why he didn’t have a stellar sophomore season, and it didn’t help either that he was injured all year long either. My prediction is that the Bears will use Forte and Taylor as a one-two punch to keep the defense on their toes at all times, but I also have a feeling that Forte will have more carries than Taylor. Forte tends to be agile and elude tacklers and Taylor tends to be the smash mouth “I’m going to rock you” running back the Bears have been lacking for the past few years.  With a semi-improved offensive line it will help create holes for those two. From what BearsAddict and DecaturNate said in their latest podcast (#68), they weren’t all too impressed with the way the line looked and that worries me a bit. I have a feeling they will get better as training camp goes on… Hopefully. They need to open up holes for the running and give Cutler plenty of time for those extensive planned out plays that Martz likes to call.

I didn’t forget about the rest of the RB crew. The Bears have recently acquired Harvey Unga from the supplemental draft. They only gave up a seventh round draft pick for him, which isn’t too bad. Unga was slated to go in the second to fourth round in the regular draft. So I think it was a win for both sides. I think he will help out in short yard situations, and the same goes for Kahlil Bell. Who was most known for breaking that huge gain last year. I don’t think they will be getting a lot of carries this year, mainly because the Bears have a stellar duo in Forte and Taylor. You are probably thinking, what about Garrett Wolfe and Brandon Minor? Well, I think they will put Minor on the practice squad and Wolfe will be a special teams player mainly. He just didn’t pan out in the Turner offense and I don’t think he will in Martz’s playbook either. It also doesn’t help the Bears didn’t really block all that well for him either.

How do you feel about the depth of the Bears current RB Corps?

Does anyone else get that feeling?

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Does anyone else get the feeling the Bears are going to to do big things this year? I just have a feeling the Bears will go deep into the playoffs this year with the help of Peppers on Defense and the offensive mastermind Mike Martz.

I truly think that the Bears have a real shot this year. We all know what Jay Cutler is capable of, and he won’t throw that many interceptions this year. With his receivers having a year under their belt and the help of Martz, he will cut down on turnovers. One thing I’m not totally sold on is the offensive line, but I am sold on Chris Williams. The way he performed late last year was amazing, and I’ll never forget the Bears and Vikings MNF game either. He blocked like a 5 year veteran out there.

The Bears defense was greatly upgraded this year as well. With the acquisition of Julius Peppers and Safety Chris Harris will help out the Bears greatly. I just wish they would of kept Alex Brown, but that’s another story for another day. They also drafted a very respectable safety and defensive end. There will be a lot of speed on the defense this year, and that will help create turnovers.

So yeah, this could be the year… or not. I truly believe it is. What do you think?

Martz: “I love our receivers”

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

That is no misquote, Martz really said that.  Last year the receiving corps was probably one of the weakest  in the league. They had little to no NFL experience. According to Martz they will be strength of the team. Only time will tell.

“I love our receivers,” Martz said Sunday after the Bears concluded their rookie minicamp with a 90-minute practice. “I think that our receiver corps will be the strength of this team.

“You can put that in granite. I can promise you that one. There’s not very many things I would say are unretractable, but that one is pretty strong. This will be the strength of this football team. It’s a terrific group.” via Chicago Bears Official Website

I am a little shocked to be honest. I don’t think I ever heard Ron Turner say that about the wide receivers when he was with the Bears all that time. I could be wrong though. I’m happy that Martz likes the receiver corps. I just hope he can use Cutler and the rest of that offense to it’s potential. They could be one helluva dominant offense in the NFC North. Something they have been lacking for quite some time now.

Now that the Bears receivers have at least a year under their belt, I don’t think we will be seeing a lot of bad route running that causes interceptions. I’m not saying that it was all on the receivers last year. Jay did make a few bad decisions that led to the turnovers. He also didn’t have the greatest offensive coordinator to call plays for the offense. It was quite sad to see him throw screen passes instead of bombing it down the field like he should of been doing.

Here’s my prediction on how the Bears depth chart will look like.

1. Devin Aromashodu
2. Johnny Knox
3. Devin Hester
4. Earl Bennett
5. Juaquin Iglesias
6. Freddie Barnes/Eric Peterman

What are your thoughts on the Bears WR Corps and do you agree or disagree with my prediction?
